The nuclear powered icebreaker which was to take us to the Pole, Fifty Years Since Victory (or Fifty Years Anniversary of Victory, or Fifty Years of Victory, depending on how you translate 50 лет Победы) is based with the rest of the Russian Atom Fleet in the harbour north of Murmansk. Photography is not allowed within this facility, so the first pictures I was able to take were as the ship prepared to cast off for the voyage.

Because of the size and 11 metre draught of the ship, it can only depart and dock at Murmansk around high tide. Two tugboats pulled the ship from its dock into the channel.
