In the semi-arid regions of southern Africa, wildlife survives the dry
season by visiting waterholes like this one, photographed on the flight
into Vumbura Camp, Botswana. The trails used by animals which frequent the
waterholes are clearly visible extending radially outward into the
bush. Elephants play an important rôle in maintaining waterholes,
as their wallowing for mud baths keeps the waterholes from filling
up with silt.
